Afterschool Investments Project, a service of the Child Care Bureau

State Afterschool Profiles provide a snapshot of the "state of afterschool" in every state as well as an opportunity to compare afterschool activities across the country. Profiles highlight key data and descriptions of the afterschool landscape. Profiles are searchable by state or type of initiative -- including professional development, financing, and other topics -- across states.

Center for Law and Social Policy (CLASP) 50-State and Community Policy Database

The Center for Law and Social Policy (CLASP) has developed a 50-state policy database featuring fact sheets, publications, and other resources on each state, as well as 20 local communities. Resources focus on five core issues: Child Care and Early Education, Child Welfare, Poverty & Opportunity, Temporary Assistance, and Youth.

Early Childhood Institute's Online Atlas Tools

The Early Childhood Atlas, developed by the National Center for Rural Early Childhood Learning Initiatives at the Early Childhood Institute of Mississippi State University and the Rural Policy Research Institute, offers a set of easy-to-use online tools to access early childhood data across the 50 states, and counties and municipalities within states. This is one initiative of the Early Childhood Institute, which provides training, technical assistance, and applied research for improved quality and accessibility of early care and education. The Early Childhood Atlas consists of an Early Childhood Status Report, Map Archive, and Map Maker.

Education Commission of the States

The Education Commission of the States (ECS) is an interstate compact created in 1965 to improve public education by facilitating the exchange of information, ideas and experiences among state policymakers and education leaders. The site features several 50-state databases, including on early learning, K-12, and postsecondary.

Extension Cares Initiative: Child Care County Profiles

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Extension Cares Initiative provides access to Child Care County Profiles for early care and education, school-age care, and teen programs. The tool enables you to compare state to national averages, view all counties in the state, or access information for a particular county in any of the 50 states. The profiles provide information on the general population and child populations, general economic and education information, and family characteristics and work patterns.

Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics

The Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics (the Forum) is a collection of 20 Federal government agencies involved in research and activities related to children and families. The Forum sponsors Childstats.gov, a web site that offers easy access to statistics and reports on children and families, including: population and family characteristics, economic security, health, behavior and social environment, and education.

KIDS COUNT offers several interactive online databases that allow visitors to create free, customized data reports. The report choices vary by system, but include the ability to generate custom profiles, line graphs, maps, and rankings, and download raw data.

National Center for Education Statistics (NCES)

  1. Common Core of Data

    The Common Core of Data (CCD) is made up of a set of five surveys sent to state education departments. Statistical information is collected annually from public elementary and secondary schools (approximately 94,000) public school districts (approximately 17,000) and the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Department of Defense Schools, and the outlying areas.

  2. Build a Table

    The CCD Build a Table (BAT) tool allows users access to multi-year Common Core of Data (CCD), elementary/secondary public school information. Data tables can be created for schools, school districts, counties, and states for school years 1986-87 through 2002-2003.

This web site provides public access to the most recent data about children with disabilities served under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
